Like most sculptures, the idea for “Alien” came to Bart Ingraham in a mental picture.
“It took three years to come into fruition,” he said. “It was a tree beside a shop. I wiggled it out and looked at it every day for three years.”
Ingraham said his sculptures give viewers a new perspective on wood’s potential.
“When you see sculpture in nature, you see things you wouldn’t necessarily see,” he said. “Walk of Art is one of the greatest natural galleries.”

Ingraham traced his artistic interests to his time in the Peace Corps in the Philippines where he witnessed mountain artisans carving pieces to sell to tourists.
“Upon returning from the Philippines, I started creating items which were incorporated into our living space. With the passing of time I started creating signs for local businesses done in the relief style. This satisfied my creative urges until the turn of the century when I started carving in three dimensions. I started small and got hooked by the process of creating something from an unformed block of wood. Three years ago I tried carving in stone and now work in both mediums. I am represented by two galleries in Traverse City and at our business, Bellwether Gardens in Suttons Bay. My work has been juried into several local shows.” -Bart Ingraham
Ingraham’s work has been on display since the Walk of Art opened in 2013. His work was also featured in Michigan Legacy Art Park.
