Helen Hierta’s totemic works are inspired by meditations on energy flow, on the evolution of consciousness. In her practice there are metaphysical exchanges of both creation and the encounter, providing for contemplation of how energy is imbued into clay, how the invisible world if made visible. She studies the intangible feelings that flood the body, the life force that signifies place or geography.
Her exploration of thought as a vibration that becomes identity is an examination of humanity’s shared physical and emotional journeys of awakening.
Helen’s totems can be found in public places, sculpture parks, galleries, private collections. They hold space for our shared histories, are messengers of collective consciousness. Her craft is a primitive approximation of the unseen neural pathways, the spiritual science of communication.
Living and working on the shore of Lake Huron, Helen Hierta’s ceramic art draws on decades of experience and study of creativity, spirituality, and natural environments. She enjoys a sense that the medium and its processes are fertile ground for contemplation of how energy is imbued into clay. Helen is compelled to make art that speaks to what the collective soul needs to see and hear from artists who get inspiration from the divine.
Totemic sculptures offer a symbolic interpretation of the world as a spiritual experience. The artist envisions her sculptures installed in natural environments, offering year round visceral interactions of landscapes within and around us.
Each hand made, hand carved ceramic disc and spacer is made from Michigan clay that is first bisque fired then surface treated and high fired in atmospheric conditions available from a gas soda or wood kiln. The results offer contemplation of the process of weathering — human or environmental.
