As a non-profit and invested member of the community, the team at the Industrial Arts Institute in Onaway is committed to continuous improvement initiatives that make our northern Michigan home a healthier, safer, and more beautiful place for residents and tourists alike. Our own mission is equally focused on the improvement of our shared home – to build a professional trades workforce that can impact northern Michigan productivity and reduce unemployment. As part of our comprehensive welding curriculum last term, our students produced a public art piece entitled “Orb and Spire,” under the guidance of designer Tom Moran, artist-in-residence Ann Gildner, and our welding instructors. Twenty students contributed to the construction of this piece, a meaningful and important part of their learning process. Now graduates, their final product awaits an opportunity to engage imaginations on the public stage.
